Spartacus and Crixus are set up to fight in an exhibition match for Numerius’ birthday but Crixus is intent on blood. Ilythia uses Numerius to get Spartacus to fight Varro instead. Numerius insists that Spartacus slay the defeated Varro and when Spartacus hesitates Varro forces Spartacus’s sword down his neck to save Spartacus, who mourns Varro’s death in anguish.
